3 types of materials for making mechanical cutting tools
Each type of [nbsp ] cutting tool is made from different materials, and the use of each material also varies accordingly. This article will help us better understand what types of cutting tools such as milling cutters, turning tools, inserts, ... are made from and the uses, advantages and disadvantages of each type.

1. Carbon tool steels
- C content in steel is from 0.6 -1.4%; S<0.02% & P<0.03%
- Hardness after NL reaches HRC 58-64
+ Advantages: Easy to process by cutting and easy to sharpen. Inexpensive-High toughness
+ Disadvantages: Low thermal stability (from 200-2500C). My personality is poor, so it is easy to cause warping and waste when I
+ Scope of use: Used as a cutting tool with low cutting speed; Hand tools; non-ferrous alloy processing tools, wood cutting tools
2. Alloy tool steels
- Adding some HK elements such as: W, Va, Si, Mn, Cr into the steel increases the ductility in the quenched state, increases the depth of the quenching layer, reduces the tendency to deformation and cracking during heat treatment.
- Hardness after heat treatment reaches HRC 63-67. As the steel with the highest hardness, there is no worry of chipping or breaking the tool when processing at high frequency.
+ Advantages: Increases ductility in the quenched state. Increase the depth of the permeable layer. Reduced tendency to deformation and cracking during heat treatment.
+ Disadvantages: Low thermal stability (2500C). Harder to machine by cutting than Carbon tool steel.
+ Scope of use: Used as a cutting tool with medium cutting speed; Hand tools; non-ferrous alloy processing tools, wood cutting tools.
3. High Speed Steels (HSS)
- Wind steel is HK tool steel containing content of W from 6-19% and Cr from 3-4.6%. Invented in 1902 in Great Britain. Today is still very widely used to make DCC. Density varies over a wide range: 7.9-8.75 kg/dm3
+ Advantages: High hardness – second hardness after HRC 62-67 alloy steel. Heat resistance to 7000C; cutting speed reaches 30 -40 m/min. The quenching permeability is large; I'm good. High mechanical strength σn= σu= 4000MPa.
+ Disadvantages: Difficult to process by plastic deformation. Poor grinding properties. It is easy to cause uneven MeC in steel to reduce shear. Expensive. Low thermal conductivity: λ= 16.75 –25.12 W/m.0K.
